HEATING MODE: HOW TO USE THE AIR CONDITIONER IN WINTER

HEATING MODE: HOW TO USE THE AIR CONDITIONER IN WINTER

Residents of cities use air conditioning to heat the apartment in the fall, while utilities have not yet turned on the heating. Country houses use it as an alternative source of heat. Is it safe to use this device in heating mode in autumn and winter and how can it be set up for this?

Alternative ways to heat a house are relevant for many of us. Changes in energy prices make you think about ways to save. Heating devices sometimes fail and require repair. Emergency disconnections from the gas or power supply also occur. The prudent owner should take care of the possibility of alternative heating.

Of course, the “warm floor” system or a wood-burning fireplace in the living room will not solve the problem of heating a house in the winter cold, but on a damp and cold autumn day will be very useful. Fan heater or air conditioner included for heating is a good solution. And the simplest. Therefore – it is necessary to recall the presence of the air conditioner and switch it to the heating mode.

Warm or clean air?

Misted windows in cold weather is a sign that the apartment is not ventilated. People clog up their windows and literally breathe their fumes.The air is saturated not only with water vapor and carbon dioxide, but also with smells, particles of the same food in the form of steam, carbon dioxide and other waste products, respiration and secretions from furniture made of chipboard and with non-ecological coatings.

People are not feeling ill at home and at work because of the lack of oxygen, but because of the oversaturation of the dwelling atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other harmful substances. All that needs to be done is to open the window and wait until the air in the room is completely replaced with fresh. Many will say: what about winter? After all, cold, drafts! Turn on any device that quickly heats the air!

Air conditioning for heating

Air conditioner or ordinary electric heater?

The heater works due to the active transformation and consumption of electricity and it noticeably loses the functions of the air conditioner in the following plan:

  • consumes a lot of energy;
  • heats the room unevenly, as a result of which it is necessary to turn it on to greater power in order to heat remote corners;
  • long heats the air in the room to a comfortable.

Air conditioning for heating works differently than the electric heater. When cooling air, it transfers heat from the room to the street through the exchanger of the outdoor unit. When working in the heating mode, the functions of the air conditioner change in exactly the opposite way: the device heats the room, thanks to the cooling of the air outside.

This is due to the fact that the air conditioner uses electricity exclusively for the operation of the fans and the compressor that transfers heat to the room.

How does air conditioning work in heating mode?

Proceeding from this, the main function of the air conditioner is that it transfers heat in the heat pump mode and spends much less electricity than it gives heat to the room. In this regard, the inverter air conditioner can cope with the task much better, because it has adjustable power: after the temperature in your house has been set to the desired value. This air conditioner does not turn off, and by reducing the speed of the compressor can maintain heat in the desired mode, helping to save a considerable amount of electricity.

To transfer heat, the device uses the necessary substances, called refrigerants, which come into contact with the surrounding air through heat exchangers in the following steps:

  • heat from one air niche is absorbed by the refrigerant through the heat exchanger;
  • the compressor pumps the refrigerant to another heat exchanger;
  • refrigerant concentrated heat is transported to the air.

Air conditioning for heating

Is it possible to use the air conditioner in heating mode in winter at very low temperatures?

It is best to use air conditioning for heating in the cool summer months and during the off-season, i.e. before the start of the heating season and immediately after it. As a rule, the instruction of a household air conditioner indicates the range of outdoor temperatures at which it can operate.

Standardly, the lowest temperature during heating operation is -5 degrees.Although some inverter models quite cope with these functions at -15 degrees.

The climatic conditions of most of our country do not allow the owners of the device to apply the full use of the air conditioner in the winter because of the possibility of its failure.

According to the recommendation of most manufacturers, optimal use of the air conditioner in winter is its conservation, because at very low temperatures serious problems with the air conditioner may occur. The lower the degree, the worse the performance of the air conditioner and its systems:

  • heat exchanger is covered with frost and loses power;
  • a system is constantly activated that supports defrosting the outdoor unit, leading to the formation of ice buildup inside the compressor and destruction of the fan blades;
  • the refrigerant, which did not evaporate in a poorly functioning heat exchanger, flows through the drainage systems into the compressor, causing a hydraulic shock;
  • the compressor overheats at first, and then freezes over, failing.

Portable air conditioner as a source of heat

What to do if you can not do without heating with such a device? It is appropriate to use a mobile floor unit designed for space heating. Moreover, it can be put in almost any place in the apartment. The monoblock used for cooling uses freon and is equipped with a powerful pump and a long corrugated pipe ejected outside the window for exhausting hot air.

By the same principle, a monoblock for heating can work, using in this case not a freon loop system, but a ceramic heat heater. The biggest stumbling block is that the hose must be removed somewhere. If we consider that it is necessary to use such a device in the winter – the task is not an easy one.Whenever possible, the easiest way is to pull the hose into a vent or other similar drainage system.

In any case, this option in the winter is quite convenient and heating in this way does not cause any special problems. The mobility of the air conditioner allows you to roll it from one room to another, evenly warming the entire room.

How to turn on the heating mode

If you want to adjust the air conditioner to heat, but lost the instructions and do not know how to do it, do not worry. All such devices work about the same, and therefore you can turn on the heat if you use our advice. But first, make sure that your air conditioner can still be adjusted for heating: not all models allow it. You can learn about the characteristics of your device on the Internet by typing in the search engine the brand and model of a split system.

To turn on the air conditioner for heating, you need to use the remote control:

  • press the power button (“On / Off”);
  • find the “HEAT” button (warmly) and press it;
  • if “HEAT” is not on the console, there must be a “MODE” button (mode switching) or any other one over which a droplet, snowflake, sun and fan are drawn;

If the remote does not have either the sun or the inscription “NEAT”, but there are other modes and are displayed, this means that your split-system cannot heat the room.

  • switch modes until the sun appears on the screen or the inscription “HEAT”;
  • With the help of “+” and “-” (or up and down arrows) you need to set the desired temperature. It must be higher than that which is now in the room;
  • the fan is usually turned on first and then the air starts to heat up;
  • after 5 (maximum 10) minutes, the air conditioner should start working for heat.

On some models, first set up the data on the remote and only then press the “On / Off” button. Remember that the split-system must respond to your pressing: (squeak, blink, turn on and off).

Even if you have a sun or the inscription “HEAT”, this does not guarantee that the air conditioner will help to heat the room. Sometimes manufacturers use standard consoles for all their devices. It is better to clarify the characteristics of your particular model.

What to do if the air does not heat up

If 10, or even 15 minutes have passed, and the air conditioner has not yet begun to produce heat, it means either it is not intended for this or something has broken in it. There may also be another reason: you have not managed to set the settings correctly. Try to do everything first, carefully reading our instructions and listening to the reaction of the split system.After 10-15 minutes after switching on, bring your hand to the device and check whether heat comes from it.

If there is little freon in the system, it will also not be able to heat the room.In this case, you will have to contact the repair shop.
